The Reason I Started Blogging
I have wanted to get out of the telemarketing industry for 3 years and to be able to work from home.
So, I started searching online for opportunities that would enable me to be able to do that.
I was a complete novice at this online thing and I got burned a couple of times by joining the wrong type of program, these generally fell into the category of get-rich-quick schemes, with ads showing nice houses and flashy cars and the promise to earn big bucks.
However, I knew there was a proper way so I kept searching and came across lots of interesting blogs, these people made money from writing them.
They shared topics that they enjoy writing about and I thought I’m sure I can do that.
It is not quite as easy as ABC when you first start, there is a lot of terminologies that you need to understand. I made lots of errors in the beginning.
This is one of the ways I’m going to help you out. You can learn the technical terms with me as you go along.
There are lots of ways to earn money from a blog, keep reading to find out about some of them.
It’s Not Necessary To Be An Expert To Start
I have spoken to lots of friends about writing a blog and they say I could not do that?
I always ask why is that what you think? The answer is generally along the lines of I’m not a good writer, I wouldn’t know what to write about.
Well, I can tell you, If, you feel passionate about a subject you will be able to write a blog about it and make money in the process.
I’m not a good writer but if I can manage to do it so can you.
Here are a couple of things you can write about, You like to decorate your home you have a series of before and after pictures.
You write about the process, the materials used and the next steps between each picture and there are your first blog post. Simple.
You are a new mum you can share your pregnancy experience and some tips on specific parenting techniques.
One thing to note about blogging it takes time to get noticed by the search engines, your new site will get indexed pretty quickly but it does take a while to get ranked.
It’s the ranking of the site that will start to earn you money. In plain terms, this isn’t a get- rich- quick scheme.
You may not make any money in the first few months ( this is normal) Don’t get discouraged just keep going and watch the magic happen.
One Of The First Ways To Earn Money
A lot of bloggers start off with Google Adsense, this is where ads are put onto your site, when somebody clicks on the ad you get paid.
It is only less than a dollar/pound/euro. Over the course of a month, it can add up to a few hundred in the beginning.
As time goes on and your traffic increases so will the ad revenue.
You can get accepted by Adsense when you have around 15 unique blog posts on your site.
As your site gets older you can then move on to the next level of ads by a company called Mediavine, with this one you need to have a lot more traffic every day to get accepted.
This one pays you a lot more and you can expect revenue in the $1000’s each month.
You do not need to sell a single item if you don’t want, to earn money from your blogs. How brilliant is that?
If, you are ready for the first steps on how to start a blog and earn some money then let’s get started :
Step 1. Knowing The Type Of Blog To Start
You are going to be writing about this subject for years to come so think about where your passion lies, what subjects do you know a lot about?
who is going to want to learn from the information? ( IE the readers), Is there a way to make money from the subject?
On your blog, you can literally write about anything, but you need to take into consideration that you need to earn money from it as well.
If no one wants to learn about your subject and read your posts apart from your family and friends then you won’t get very far with making money.
Below you will find a small list of profitable trending topics that will help you to get some ideas of what you might want to write about:
- Babies, who doesn’t like talking about children
- Beauty: makeup, skincare, etc
- Budgeting/ways of saving money
- Crafts/sewing, knitting, crocheting
- Eating, Vegetarian, Vegan
- Home Decorating
- Health and wellness
- Ladies Fashion
- Men’s Fashion
- Making Money Online (MMO Niche)
- Weight Loss
These are just a few of the topics that could be used to get started with. Doing a Google search can give you many other ideas.
Step 2. Next Up You Need To Choose A Platform
Hey Lisa what is a platform? Don’t worry I have you covered. A platform is where your blog post is going to live. In technical terms, It’s where it is hosted.
Mine is hosted on word press, one of the best reasons for choosing this platform is you can do all the design work yourself saving you lots of money by paying an expert to do it up for you.
There are loads of free themes to choose from and lots of plugins to choose from that can enhance your site.
Word press is not the only available choice. You could use Weebly, Wix, Squarespace, and countless others that are out there.
You may know more about one of the others.
In the beginning, there are only a few steps to complete to get set up so you can get started with your writing, Don’t worry too much at this stage about how the page looks, we will get to the designing of the actual site at a later date.
Step 3. Choosing A Domain Name
The domain name is your website address, it is a very important part of your business.
I highly recommend you spend a bit of time deciding what domain name you are going to choose.
Things to take into consideration: it needs to be catchy, memorable, and preferably related to your niche.
These tips will help you to get more traffic. Traffic = sales, which = Money.
If you intend to become an authority in your niche I would recommend that you use your name with.com on the end.
A good thing to remember is to try to only have three words before the .com this is considered to be an ideal choice and don’t choose one that contains hyphens.
I made that mistake with my first domain.
A .com is usually the best choice as it’s the easiest one to remember.
We are going to leave it there for today, I know you are excited to get further forward but, you have a few things to take into consideration.
Choosing a niche is a big step for a lot of people.
I can let you into a secret, I got it wrong by not giving it enough thought.
When you purchase a domain it is for a minimum of 12 months, so choose wisely, otherwise, you will have to purchase another one.
Choosing a domain name related to your niche takes a bit of thinking about and some research.
I use a platform that has the domain name included along with the hosting and the word press site. If you want to know more about it, You can ask me in the comments below.
If you want to do it alone you can get a domain from Go Daddy. There is a second part to this post you can find the details below.
In the next part, one of the things we will cover is Hosting part 2 entitled How To Earn Money By Creating A Blog, This can be found here.
