Hello, my friend and a very warm welcome back. Today we are going to look at When Is The Best Time To Monetize Our Blog And How To Do It?
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to monetizing our blogs just recommendations based on experience. As well as taking into consideration what sort of monetization is required. For Example
- Are You An Affiliate Marketer?
- Building An Email List
- Do You Sell Your Own Products?
- Have you got sponsored posts on your site?
- When Can You Put ads on your site?
- Do you want to add a blog flipping service?
These are all factors when it comes to determining when your site should be monetized.
Most people these days start a blog predominantly to make money so knowing when it is best to start monetizing is a very acceptable question to ask!
Can it be done from day 1 on your first blog post or should you wait? Those are questions that will be answered if you keep reading!
This post may contain affiliate links. This means if you click a link and make a purchase I will receive a commission. The price you pay will not be affected.
Are You An Affiliate Marketer?
This is an important question to ask yourself because the rules for monetization are very different if you are.
Affiliate marketing is amongst the niches that make the most money online. You can find people earning millions of dollars using this popular method.
When you apply to affiliate marketing networks like ShareASale, Amazon Associates, or any brand affiliate programs they actually visit your site. Their aim is to make money from visitors to your blog posts where you add affiliate links and banners and the lead makes a purchase through your link.
In order for this to work out for both of you Waiting until you have 15-30 posts on your site will help you to get accepted easier.
Going by experience having that amount of posts meant I started making a small income with Amazon, Clickbank, JV Zoo, and private affiliate companies.
Using this method you don’t actually need a ton of visitors and if you are really impatient it can be done from day 1. If you go for the day 1 option just be aware you may not be accepted by some companies.
This is my favourite money-making method of them all and 1 I have been involved with for nearly 2 years.
Building An Email List
As a blogger, you should grow an email list and this can be done in several ways:
Offer things for free such as training, ebooks, pdf’s etc.
The most popular way that people sign up for an email list is from an exit pop up.
This is exactly what it says it is, as people go to click off of your site a pop up appears and it will entice people to go to an offer or put in their details to join your list.
You don’t only have to use an exit pop up for more engagement you can have buttons all over your site in the header, sidebar and in the footer as well.
Do You Sell Your Own Products?
If you sell your own products you can do this from day 1, but it is recommended to work best when you have 500 email subscribers to sell to.
When writing blog posts your aim is to write about the product, service, or program the same as you would with an affiliate marketing post.
Using this method you don’t need to get any acceptance from anyone and that gives you a big advantage. It is also a method that doesn’t need much traffic.
Depending on what you are selling you can name your price and keep all of the money.
Say you are a freelance writer with experience you can charge up to $400 per post and you would only need a few gigs a month for a nice income!
Maybe you have experience in blogging consultancy this can earn you even more money than freelancing.
if you are producing things like ebooks and courses or digital products then you would be likely to sell them to your email list so then you would wait until you have at least 500 people on it.
This would probably work best from year 1 onwards because you will have built authority and have a certain amount of visitors each month.
Have You Got Sponsored Posts On Your Site?
You can have sponsored posts on your site but using this method can take some time before companies start to request your blog space.
I’m sure this makes sense to you because big sponsors require lots of traffic and they will not entertain websites that don’t have whatever is the minimum amount that they set.
These are also called direct sales and can be where companies rent space on your website and you get paid on a pay per click basis.
Both Of These methods are for when your site is well established say 3 to 4 years old and you will often be given the item to try out and give your honest feedback on.
Sponsored posts can also be paid out in cash depending on who the sponsor is and what criteria they adhere to.
When Can You Put Ads On Your Site?
We all know ads are what make money on websites but not all ads are equal!
Google Adsense is the easiest one to get accepted for because it doesn’t have a minimum amount of page views. Even so, it does have rules that you need to comply with. The pay for these ads is the smallest amount offered and they don’t payout until you reach $100.
Monumetric is used by many bloggers and pays out a lot more than Google Adsense you are required to have 10,000 page views in 30 days to get accepted.
Mediavine is a very popular ad network with a high payout rate but to get accepted here you need 50,000 sessions a month. They set everything up for you and have amazing support.
AdThrive is the hardest one to get accepted for simply because you need to have 100,000 sessions a month. But they pay the highest amount out!
As you can see with most ad sites there is a minimum traffic requirement before you can display the ads. Media .net is another one with no minimum traffic needed so that and Google Adsense can be used from day 1.
Even though there are 2 ad networks with no minimum qualifying sessions you will obviously need some traffic to make any money and the minimum payout for both of these is $100.
Having ads and affiliate marketing links on your site is a brilliant double strategy that you can employ to earn more every month.
Blog Flipping Services
Blog Flipping has become a very popular service recently.
Have you heard of it?
This is a monetization method in which you start a blog from scratch or buy an existing blog from someone else, grow it to a certain level in terms of posts, traffic, and revenue, and then sell it off on sites such as Flippa, or AlphaInvestors.
The amount you can sell it for is dependant on your niche as well as how much revenue it makes each month.
Other factors include:
- The Monthly traffic it receives
- The number of traffic sources associated with the site
- The number of income sources that pay you
- The age of your blog, the older the better
- The quality of your backlinks pointing to your site
- The size of your email list is taken into consideration
- The quality of content on your website
I have a blogging buddy that sold one of his sites for $30,000.
You will have to provide stats for selling a blog one of the 2 best ways is with Adsense and analytics.
if you don’t prove all of the statistical claims you make in your sale period then you won’t get a buyer. You need to have physical proof that you get a certain amount of views, rankings, and clicks. . Syncing your blog with AdSense and Analytics is the best way to get this information.
This is very obviously a long-term monetization strategy but it is one worth considering for the future!
Conclusion
Just to go over when you should Monetize your blog?
For Affiliate Marketers from day 1 or for better acceptance when you have 15-30 blogs posted.
Selling your own products can be done from day 1, but it is recommended to work best when you have 500 email subscribers.
Growing your email list can be done from day one because it grows as your authority grows.
Sponsored posts are something you have to wait for but, it could be as soon as 6 months.
Having ads on your website can be done from day 1 depending on the ad network chosen.
Flipping a website is a long term project and can take anywhere from 1-2 years depending on whether you start it from scratch or build out a per existing one.

Great tips. My blog is 8 months old and I just made my first $$$ this past month through affiliate marketing. And this month I’m launching my own products for sale. However, I still don’t feel confident enough for sponsored posts and ads.
Thanks very much and congratulations on your sales with affiliate marketing.
Good luck in launching your own products, Nadia.
